Red Hills Mine

Red Hills Mine was amazing!!!!!!!!!! I have never thought about the process of extracting coal from the Earth, but it was an interesting and educational experience visiting Ackerman's Red Hills Mine today.

What I learned:
1. Big machinery is expensive and just cool! The cost of one tire on a dump truck is more than I will ever make in a year.
2. Mining does not strip the earth of its resources. In fact, restoration leaves the land better than it was before. Mining companies put a lot of thought and effort into fixing what was excavated.
3. Chemistry is a significant part of mining and much thought is put into water conservation and pollution of chemicals.

I could do a water analysis lab in chemistry that measures pH and metal contaminants of water from different areas of Chickasaw count.  This lab would simulate testing done by mining corporations.
